Superfund was a reaction to concerns with hazardous waste sites that are causing environmental problems. One of the major causes for the Superfund was the Love Canal issue. The Superfund supplies funds and help to cleanup these hazardous waste sites.

The groundwater is contaminated with VOCs, the chemical components of solvents and degreasers, from materials dumped at the site. Some areas of the site are also contaminated with copper and zinc.
