Why Was OSHA Needed? The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) of 1970 was created to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. Before OSHA there were no regulations in place to protect employees from work-related injuries and injury at work was common. Of these numerous injuries, many were fatal. "In the two years prior OSHA's enactment, 14,000 workers died each year from workplace hazards, and another 2 million were disabled or harmed."(wikipedia).

What Does OSHA Do? "[OSHA's] goal was to make sure employers provide their workers a place of employment free from recognized hazards to safety and health, such as exposure to toxic chemicals, excessive noise levels, mechanical dangers, heat or cold stress, or unsanitary conditions." To accomplish this goal OSHA provides safety glasses and shoes, helmets, respirators, and hearing protecters for employees. OSHA also conducts unannounced inspections to ensure employers are providing the necessary equipment for their employees.
